This was the blog I wrote in July. I guess nothing changed.

“The theatre shooting in Colorado once again highlights the NRA and its supporters total disregard for the Founders true meaning of the Second Amendment to the Constitution, and further proves the insane fervour for the use of guns in this so-called civilised and sophisticated country.

The Second Amendment ratified by the States and authenticated by Thomas Jefferson reads thus:

“A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”

Now I am not a Constitutional Scholar but that seems to me that this statement refers to the People being part of a Militia, and as such having the right to bear arms. Also take into account the turbulent times in which the Amendment was written. A new country born from tyranny and not wishing to repeat the error by allowing the central Government Army to be stronger than the people.

Huh I hear you say.

The thinking back then was to ensure the Government could not, would not, enforce Laws that the People did not want, because they, The People, could rise up and destroy the Government. And how do I come to this conclusion?

“The supreme power in America can not enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any bands of regular troops.” – Noah Webster, 1787

So are the NRA and assault rifle owners across the Nation planning a takeover of the Government?  Well I guess they are succeeding because the NRA controls the Republicans and half the Democrats.

So where does that leave unsuspecting citizens just out to enjoy a movie?

At the hands of another citizen who was able to buy assault rifles, shotguns, handguns, body armour, gas masks, explosives, detonators and over 6,000 rounds of ammunition, BY MAIL.

Tell me, was he a member of a militia? Did he have designs on stopping the Government enacting Laws that would counter the rights of American Citizens?

The manipulation of the Constitution by those wishing to pursue their own agenda, is one of the extraordinary aspects of living in a country whose people think their power comes from the barrel of a gun.

The old nonsense of ‘guns don’t kill people do’, is absurd.  Guns are designed to kill. Period. So if you want to own a gun, logic says you want to kill something with it. Otherwise why not have a water pistol?

And for those who think I’m a liberal pacifist, flower-power hippie, I spent nearly eight years in Britain’s elite Parachute Regiment and rose from the rank of Private Soldier to Captain and wrote a book, CONTACT, about my tours in Northern Ireland. I have used weapons in anger, seen the results of death by gunshot wounds and bombs, and since leaving the army have not touched a weapon because the only reason to have one is to kill somebody.

Stringently enacted gun laws are essential to preserve what’s left of our decency, social responsibility and humanity.

Last week a three year old child shot and killed his father because the child found a loaded gun in the house. A neighbourhood watch “captain” shot and killed an eighteen year-old returning home from a store. The number of gun related incidents not related to crimes is horrendous and for what?

Some years ago a neighbour of mine, a Vietnam Vet who went off his meds and started threatening another neighbour, was found to have an assault rifle, a M1 carbine several handguns and 10,000 rounds of ammunition on his 27 foot boat. Thank God we got him into hospital before he had a chance to use them.  And if you think this is a lone incident, you’d be wrong.  This country is infested with guns. It is a gun culture akin to a childlike obsession with wooden swords and violence.

When will sanity prevail?”

Now we have had several more deadly mass shootings culminating in the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. I say culminating but that is the wrong word, because unless there are meaningful, sensible, gun control laws in America this obscenity will continue. I heard idiot NRA supporters trot out the phrase “Guns don’t kill people. People do”. It is a lie, and an insulting disgraceful justification for carrying a gun. Guns are designed to kill, that is their purpose. If you own a gun, you want to shoot something or someone, there is no other purpose for owning a gun. America needs to grow up instead of behaving like a child whose is at risk of having its toys taken away.

Then today we had Rick Perry saying that anyone licensed to carry a concealed weapon in Texas should be allowed to.

What kind of a world do we live, where carrying a concealed weapon is considered perfectly acceptable?

At the very least carrying a concealed weapon means you are expecting to be confronted with a violent situation.

What does that say about our society.

I am appalled, disgusted, angry and would like to put Rick Perry on the front line in Afghanistan, where he can shoot all he likes, but there will be somebody shooting back at him with equal, if not more firepower.

You love guns, want to shoot things, join the military and go to war. I did and wrote a book, CONTACT, about the results and the emotional toll.
