Two statements came out of the Mitt Romney campaign in the past week that have many people scratching their heads in puzzled amazement, and me thinking I just stepped into the Twilight Zone.

The first came on the heels of a genuinely disturbing incident when Anne Romney’s aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing because of an electrical malfunction. In a speech at a fundraiser, Mitt then turned the serious incident into a farce of Herculean proportions by making this statement:

“When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous.”

Windows that roll down on commercial jet aircraft flying at up to 45,000ft? Really?

And doesn’t Mitt know that oxygen feeds fire? Or the fact there is very little oxygen above 15,000ft? Open the windows and asphyxiate. Good idea Mitt.

Then there is a statement from his campaign that apparently casts Mitt as the saviour of the US space program, with a promise to chart new explorations and ‘put America back as the leader (and presumably owner) in space’. Echoes of the Review ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses’ of 2000 – a plan repudiated by the first George Bush so you can see how ‘original’ Romney’s defense ideas are ( ) – which advocated building a Moon station as a deterrent in case those pesky Russians and Chinese get there first, as well as resurrecting the Stars Wars program. Here’s a quote from page V – ‘CONTROL THE NEW “INTERNATIONAL COMMONS” OF SPACE AND “CYBERSPACE,” and pave the way for the creation of a new military service – U.S. Space Forces – with the mission of space control’. Romney’s advisers are the guys that wrote this stuff.

Does the Romney campaign have any original ideas at all, or is he just another puppet of the extreme right wing Tea Party – NeoCons?

And how he is going to accomplish whatever ‘It’ is without spending a dime more than the current Administration’s Budget?

Well he says he wants to get private companies to work with NASA on providing a ‘charter service’ to replace the space shuttle so that NASA can continue to deliver satellites into orbit. Okay, but isn’t that what the current Administration is already doing Mitt?

Perhaps you haven’t read about it, Mitt, but there is already a deal for a company called Space-X to provide charter space vehicles for NASA.  And yes it was started under the current administration. The first such contracted cargo run to the space station is set to launch on October 7th 2012. NASA is also working on a manned project called Space Launch System – a rocket to be built by Boeing, originally outlined by President Obama in 2010, to take astronauts to explore asteroids and to reach Mars.

The importance of this is to ensure that we at least understand more about Earth threatening asteroids and the possibilities of a Mars settlement than we do already. Things that may benefit ALL Humankind, instead of the NeoCon paranoia about building military bases on the Moon to threaten every nation on Earth.

Now, I don’t know if Mitt Romney is just plain out-of-touch or simply revolving in his own star system, but there is a difference between a detailed plan of exactly what this country is going to do in space, and issuing vague policy statements based on an old ‘cold war’ style geo-political stance.

Earth to Romney, we are now in the 21st Century, come in.

Perhaps Mitt might suggest to the Space Contracting firms that they put special roll-down windows on spacecraft just in case astronauts need to bail out a million miles from Earth.

Like his other out-dated, back-to-the-past, and strangely plagiarized vague policies, Mitt Romney looks more and more like a bad and decidedly unfunny version of Dubya. Makes you positively pine for George Junior’s return doesn’t?  Or is that going a little too far? At least Dubya could tell a joke, but Willard ‘Mitt’ Romney is the joke.

And this morning I read that the Romney campaign has decided to lower expectations regarding the first debate to take place next week. Methinks they are getting cold feet and losing confidence in their candidate.

Before voting this year, I urge all reasonably minded Republicans to read the document ‘Rebuilding America’s Defenses’ so that they know what the Tea Party NeCons who control the Romney campaign really have in mind, not only for this country, but for this world we inhabit. Sadly I know they won’t, because of their stagnant, out-of-date, almost prehistoric mind-set. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and nobody has any responsibility for their fellow human.

Thank God that at least 47% do care.
